-
The clients are
feeling "claustrophobic" in their space. Since the 18th century, Trompe
l'oeil (literal: to deceive the eye) artists have used
spatial
illusion
techniques to create depth perception and space. A mural can
be an
effective solution for a faux window or the designer's
other optical illusion goals. "Bringing the outside inside" can add a
perception of space, as well as an emotional reaction to the chosen
landscape.

The clients are bored with their neutral space.
There is an
abundance
of supportive literature that suggests a relationship between color and
emotion. Multiple studies have shown that red is often associated
with stimulation, and blue with comfort and that there can be
physiological reaction to colour." So, it may be no wonder that your
clients are yawning in
their beige space.
Decorative tile
can add colour to any space. To
reduce project costs, implement decorative tile accents within the
space. For
example, in a neutral kitchen, introduce decorative accents, such as
backsplash, and integrate that same pattern into a decorative glass
cutting board and coasters. Accent colour can add interest and life to
a dull palette.
TIME DILEMMA - The clients can't decide on a style. Just because we live in the 21st century, doesn't mean that all of our furnishings should come from a department store in a box. Historic pieces in keeping with your design colours and theme can add visual interest and unique flair to a modern decor. Throughout time, multidudes of designers have had multitudes of ideas, and "going back" can be an invaluable resource for today's interior designers. A modern perspective often gives a new twist to an old idea, such as replicating the pattern of your antique curtains made into a matching tile backsplash. Works Cited Birren, F. (1978).
